This past week I came across an article on CNN’s website that caught my eye. It is about a new character that Disney is adding to their vast collection. This story explains that the new Disney film will be titled “Moana,” which is also the name of the new heroine. “Moana” is going to be about a teenage girl from Oceania who adventures through the seas around her homeland. Rumor has it, the movie will be released in the year 2016, so children and other Disney fans still have to wait for some time before they will be able to watch this.

I think I was drawn to this specific article because as a kid, I vividly remember watching Disney movies over and over again. I’m not sure if it was because we didn’t have as many options (like other forms of media) back then or if it was because those were the ones my mom preferred to show me and my siblings, but either way they are stories that have been etched into my memory. Even if I didn’t realize it at the time, I definitely learned a lot from growing up watching various Disney films.

Over time, Disney has faced a lot of different allegations over controversy with their character choices. For instance the portrayal of gender roles throughout their movies—in the past, the main girls were always beautiful princesses, and the main boys were always strong, good-looking heroes or princes. Since these issues have been brought up Disney has made evident changes in their films, and has introduced new storylines that go against typical stereotypes of the past. Ultimately, Disney seems to have taken responsibility for their actions of the past, enabling them to still create good role models and send positive messages to our youth today.

So excited to hear a new Disney character is in the works! I too was raised on Disney and have been so incredibly happy to see them breaking their own stereotype and broadening their definition of "princess". I can't wait!

I am also very excited to hear there is a new Disney character being created. I always enjoyed Disney's movies when I was growing up but I kind of stopped watching their animated films when I got older. I really got into Disney again after I took a History of Animation class here in SMC. I saw Big Hero 6 last year and it was interesting to see two independently smart and strong female characters. I really like how Disney is breaking gender stereotypes and how they are creating more diverse characters as well. Thanks for adding the CNN article.

hey yea I think that Disney is doing a very good thing by doing what they are doing. I remember growing up i always loved Disney princesses, and because you see their beautiful fairy tale stories, I think little kids always look u to them because they want a similar tale like theirs, so what little girls do is try to be like them for that reason. It a little sad when girl who may be over weight get told they can not be a princess because of their body image, and Disney princesses have always been in shape, the villain in the little mermaid is urcela and she is out of shape. I am happy about the new races, and hopefully they can keep adding more, and maybe even a prince, but hopefully they wont do discrimination.
