When you think of college, you normally think of becoming an adult, exciting new opportunities, and the chance to live on your own. It’s normally something most kids are excited about. What shouldn’t have to be researched when looking for a university to go to, is their percentage of rape on campus.

The statistic for a sexual assault in college is 1 in 5. The depressing reality is that that statistic is only the rapes that have been reported. There are hundreds more that people don’t report because they hardly ever get justice. When brought to a universities attention most fail to hold rapists accountable or give punishment.

There are many activists and advocacy groups that are bringing awareness to the matter and speaking out on campuses all over the country. It shouldn’t be a epidemic to begin with and people need to begin taking the responsibility and punishment for it. No one should have the ability to make the victim feel as if it was her fault.

When I decided to move to the States and look into colleges that i'd like to attend, the idea of rape never crossed my mind. Now however, I completely agree with you and know exactly where you're coming from. It's actually very sad that college students nowadays need to research about rape before deciding which university to attend. The research they do should be about the education, campus, and location. They should be excited not worried. I truly believe that the main issue is the law. Rapists are never held accountable and the punishment isn't enough to scare or stop them.
The punishment back home in Saudi Arabia, is way higher and fair for the victims. A change needs to happen here.

what I think it is really scary is to know that if you are raped, police and society won't take your side especially if you're a girl.
One of my closest friends was assaulted in a very well know university in LA. When she finally decided to report the crime she had to face many uncomfortable situations. She was asked if she was sure that she was rape, they were trying to make her feel guilty because alcohol was involved, not even a very big quantity. Then they were asking how was she dressed. If she led the situation on, if she was being too provocative. I mean WTF, even if I go naked to the street, nobody has the right to rape me.
My friend was so embarrassed and sick of the situation that she dropped her case. It is just a very sad thing...

I can't believe that there's the fact like that. I'm nineteen years old girl studying in college, so I can understand how she faced with really serious situlation. But the university suspected, or maybe they didn't want to face with the problem and ignore it. They should be more about educational and respect for students. How they could be a teacher or staff of the university they can't even think about students seriously? Also, they should know that they are adult and taking with young people, the students could be depressed by not only the situlation but also them. I hope the university, and people who are working there will be able to face with the problem for the better.
