Today I read this article about a Utah judge who ruled to remove a foster baby from the home of a lesbian couple. And, of course, it’s for the reasons you’d suspect--because they’re lesbians. The article says that they passed all the requirements, including background checks, home inspections, and interviews, however; the judge had the baby placed in a heterosexual home, claiming that studies (that he didn’t cite) have shown that kids raised in a same-sex parent home don’t do as well as those raised in a heterosexual home. The biological mother of the baby even wanted to have the baby stay in that home since it was doing so well there, but the judge disregarded her request. The child services agency just want the child in a safe and happy home, but have to comply with the judge’s orders.
I think it’s horrible that a clearly homophobic person is in a position of such power. I know that this is not a unique case, and that discriminatory people are in powerful positions all the time, it’s just very frustrating when reading about it. People with such prejudices should either set them aside to do their job fairly, or not be allowed to be in such positions in the first place.
