A video production by justnotsports.com shows the abuse some female reporters are subjected to on social media. In the video sports journalists Sarah Spain and Julie DiCarob are read real mean tweets posted about them on twitter. The tweets are read to the reporters by a group of average male sports fans. The men, who weren't the original authors of the tweets, clearly struggle to read the disgusting, hate-filled tweets and some even apologizing on behalf of their gender.
Threats of rape and abuse, many women covering sports are targeted daily with disgusting comments that no one would ever say out loud. Now the team behind the podcast Just Not Sports has created a video to help bring the issue to light. In reading the statements out loud to women journalists, guys are forced to experience, sometimes for the first time, the shocking online harassment happening to women in sports everyday. It serves as proof most sports fans would NEVER say these things to another person in real life. Most of the horrible tweets aimed at the Spain and DiCarob are not even printable. Others included comments like “one of the players should beat you to death with their hockey stick” and “I hope your dog gets hit by a car”.
Hate is directed at everyone on social media (it's so easy when it's not face to face), the issue that makes some of these unique is when the journalist's professional opinion is disregarded simply because they are women. No problem with disagreeing with their opinions, but to do so purely on the basis that they're women reflects an unfortunate standpoint taken by many male sports fans.
