A history teacher in Newport New, VA used the “n” during school in mid September and has been suspended since. The teacher, Lynne Pierce, was giving a lesson on racism and derogatory terms when a student asked why the term “redskins” was so inappropriate. Pierce responded by saying “What would you think if someone started a team called the Newport News Nigger?”
I don’t support this word. I don’t like anything about it. It makes everyone uncomfortable and it is like a bomb every time its said. I think the only time its okay for someone to us the “n” word is if they are teaching, especially history. This word needs to be taught as one of the worst parts of our history. We all know knowledge of history is important in order for it not to repeat itself.
Real change comes when the oppressor learns of his oppression. Its important for people to know that the r” word is offensive. I think is is an amazing lesson to teach and this teacher was totally in-bounds. Pierce, who is white, was giving a lesson in racism. I feel her example evoked a very accurate understanding of how the “r” word feels to Native Americans.
Suspending this teacher is beyond ridiculous. I know that a student felt uncomfortable, but that is exactly the important point she was trying to get across. Because of Pierce’s lesson, I have officially taken the “r” and put it right next to the “n” word in my vocab catalog of things that I wont say because I know it causes pain.

Many people seem to consider the word entirely unspeakable, which can sometimes prove to be counterproductive. While I agree that this is a word that should never be used lightly, it is arguably appropriate to use it in a historical context. You cannot learn from the past if the present is entirely censored. The teacher was clearly using it as an example to highlight an issue with contemporary hate speech. Such terms should be dealt with sensitivity, but not censorship.

I am a Black American and the word Nigger is derogatory and offensive to most black persons especially when a non-black person uses it.( Note: the word nigger and nigga is different in our culture)Being that the word nigger is such a sensitive subject to most blacks it is just wise not to use the word in your conversations or teaching examples as well. To teach this lesson she could have very well just replace the full word just by saying the "n" word. Even teaching it in historical context the full word isn't necessary, believe me every kid knows what the "N" word, just as they know what the "B" word is and the "F" word is. Just don't say it at all! Thanks

It seems that the world we live in is so focused on the political correctness and protection of lawsuits, that we have forgotten what exactly context and true meaning is all about. Now, of course a teacher explaining what the N word in a lecture may have led a student to feel uncomfortable in a class, this was the exact point the teacher was making. By explicitly using the word 'nigger' may have been considered 'over the top' for some, in actuality, this is our history here in the US; yes it was very 'over the top,' offensive, cruel and disgusting when looking back in the history books. Yes, this teacher may have been in the heat of the moment when passionately explaining how offensive this word and the entire context was back then and could have handled the situation with more sensitivity, I believe that it is ridiculous to suspend the teacher based on this merit alone. Since I do not know all of the facts and the step by step actions of this teacher, I can only assume by reading this post, that it was a decision made by the board in order to avoid a lawsuit, which today is extremely counter-productive in the bigger picture. We live in a world today that is too afraid of lawsuits and parents, that we do not have the same backbone as we once did back in the 1980's. I wish today things weren't looked at with such scrutiny, under a magnifying glass at the things that don't matter, while major problems of teachers having relations with minors, would be immediately taken seriously, into account, and reprimanded on the first account of any suspicions. The 'protected' world we live in today is so backwards.

Yes having conversation when the "n" and other sensitive words like that is going to be hard but its a conversation that needs to be had and what better atmosphere then that of a classroom to start. I too believe that society has become to PC trying not to hurt anyone feeling. well people that not how you come about change. Changing the world you live in for the better is going to hurt and its going to take hard word. the action you take and the words you say will hurt someone but it important to have sincere and open dialogue to have sincere and open change.

I'm not sure why the teacher was suspended, but if he used the word in a condescending way, then I could see it. But if he didn't I don't see how his punishment is just
