My post this is week is about the BP oil spill. I read ana article about the things we know and we do not know 6 years later.
I wanted to share this topic, because it concerns all as humans being on the same planet, sharing the same environment. For the people who don't know, because maybe they were too young like me, or people from another country, I am going to refresh your memory.
The BP oil was when "For 87 straight days, oil and methane gas spewed from an uncapped wellhead, 1 mile below the surface of the ocean." This is called the worst environmental disaster, it happened in the gulf of Mexico.
There were a lot of immediate damages on the sea life the reproductive system of the species were affected , hundreds of dolphins died, turtles, fishes, oysters etc...
Birds were also affected by this, they were intoxicated by the oil that was in the fishes they ate. Those are just a few of the multiples damages caused, and this affects us because it is damaging our food chain.
It affected the US economy tremendously, several fisheries for salmon, crab, shrimp were permanently closed. The tourism industry is now dead, the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico will never be the same, the ongoing poisoning of the water supply and the oil prices are going to rise and stay that way for a long time.
The long-term consequences are unknown, and we will have to wait several years to see what was the real damage done.
There are some things though that can be done to help like volunteering to pick up trash on the beaches affected, take animals in bad health condition to a zoo, donate money, using detergent like dawn ( it donates $1 to the BP oil restoration) and of course share the news.
