Exclusive Interview - Rose Pacatte
This month we had the good fortune of interviewing Sr. Rose Pacatte of the Pauline Center for Media Studies for an upcoming film, and we’re happy to be able to share some of this footage with you. In these exclusive clips, she discusses the need for media literacy during this upcoming political season, as well as her views on advertising and consumerism. These videos can be accessed by visiting the multimedia section of UnderstandMedia.com.
New Movie - Teaching Media Literacy 2
We’re proud to announce the completion of our latest documentary, Teaching Media Literacy: Asking MORE Questions, a companion piece to 2006’s critically acclaimed film by a similar name. This new 117-minute documentary contains never before seen interviews with Elizabeth Thoman and Tessa Jolls of the Center for Media Literacy, as well as Mathew Needleman of the Los Angeles Unified School District and VideoInTheClassroom.com. The video is great as a companion piece to the original video, or can be used on its own. The video is available for purchase from our resources section.

Los Angeles Media Literacy Event on October 26th!
The National Telemedia Conference in conjunction with the Santa Monica College Communications Department and UnderstandMedia.com are hosting a media cafe discussion roundtable. This is what Karen Ambrosh of the NTC has to say about this session:
“Our purpose for designing these Media Café Sessions is to listen to what people think the directions should be for growing the field of media literacy education. These first sessions will be done as community listening sessions patterned after the World Café Dialogue Model (http://www.co-intelligence.org/P-worldcafe.html ). Once we have done several of these in different parts of the country, we will change our process to become more action-centered. This is the beginning phase of a 3+ year initiative to build toward an international summit that will help define where the field of media literacy education needs to go.”
The event will be held on October 26th from 1pm until 3pm on the Santa Monica College campus (1900 Pico Blvd.) in room 106 of the Letters and Sciences building. There is plenty of free parking at the campus on Fridays after 12pm. If you are interested in attending, please contact Karen Ambrosh at kambrosh@wi.rr.com for more information.

Media literacy is one of the fastest growing fields within the educational community. This is helped by the fact that young adults have so much more access to various types of media. Parents and teachers are more concerned than ever about the media their children consume.
